Tanzania Camping Safari

Camping conjures up many different images for different people – memories of scout and guide camps as a youth or perhaps family camping trips – but for the purposes of the safaris offered by TATO members, there are four categories:

1. Budget Camping Safari
2. Fly Camping
3. Luxury Camping
4. Lightweight Luxury Camping Safari

safari safaris

Tanzania Budget Camping Safaris

Budget camping involves travelling with all your camp equipment, your guide and possibly a cook in your vehicle with you. Once you get to camp everyone helps cook and set up. This is economical and fun, but does mean that you spend valuable time in the evening organizing your camp and food when you could be out on game drives. These services typically use the less expensive shared or public campsites, but exclusive camps, or campsites with shower and toilet facilities outside the parks, can also be booked and used. Beds are usually mattresses on the floor of a small tent.

Tanzania Fly Camping Safari

Fly camping involves setting up small, temporary camps for a night under the stars, more often than not in a remote part of the bush. Fly camps are the ideal end to a day’s walking safari or game drive, with many unexpected comforts – a canvas washbasin with hot water, fresh towels, hurricane lamps and delicious food cooked on the fire. At night, the sensation of sleeping in a light tent or just under a mosquito net, as the moon shines down and the noises of the African night begin, is the highlight of any safari holiday.

Tanzania Luxury Camping Safari

Imagine feather pillows, soft towels, gin and tonic on the rocks and four course gourmet meals in a candlelit dining tent as far from civilization as you can get. This is what luxury camping is all about. The tents are roomy and comfortable, with a veranda in front and a bathroom with hot-water shower, washbasin and toilet directly behind the tent. The luxury tents have a bedside table, gas or solar lamps, chairs and a wardrobe for your clothing. A deep freeze will supply your drinks with ice and keep specialty food items fresh. Laundry is done daily. A large staff will ensure that your meals are gourmet and all your needs in camp are met. Luxury camps are often situated so that you can enjoy the same area for several days.

tanzania luxury safari safaris

Tanzania Lightweight Luxury Camping Safari

Like the luxury camps, tents will have metal or wood-frame beds, standing headroom, a veranda and small en-suite toilets and hot showers. However, the tents will be smaller and may be the traditional 'A' shape with a central ridge pole. The camps are fully staffed and meals will be three course affairs served by a waiter in a lantern lit mess tent, or on a table under the stars. Pick-up trucks, rather than lorries often move these camps, so they don’t have luxuries such as a deep freeze. There will usually be wine, beer and soda on ice in camp. Lightweight camps like this can be moved overnight and offer an amazing degree of comfort while maintaining the flexibility of a lighter camp.

Best times to visit are:

June to August: This is the tail-end of the long rainy season and the weather is at its best at this time of year -- bearable during the day and cool in the evening. However, this is not necessarily the best time of year for safaris, as water is plentiful in the parks and animals are not forced to congregate in a few locations to rehydrate, as they do in the middle of the dry season right after Christmas.

tanzania safari safaris

January to February: This is the best time to visit the Serengeti. It is usually at this time that huge herds of Wildebeest, Zebra and Buffalo migrate to better grazing areas. At this period you could observe some of the 1.5 million Wildebeest that inhabit the Serengeti undertake their epic journey. Be advised this is most likely the hottest time of year in Tanzania, when even the locals complain about the heat. You've been warned!

Northern Tanzania Safari Circuit
The Northern Circuit is the most frequented by tourists for two reasons: most of the destinations are fairly close to each other and many of Tanzania’s most famous sights, such as Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti and Mt Kilimanjaro are all a part of this circuit. Due to the fact that all the parks, towns and attractions are within easy reach of one another, one can tour this entire circuit by vehicle with only a couple of hours in-between destinations.

Southern Tanzania Safarti Circuit

The national parks and game reserves of the Southern Circuit are, arguably, the hidden treasures of Tanzania’s authentic Africa. These parks are enormous, with some of the highest concentrations of animals anywhere in Africa and a spectacular diversity of wildlife including roan antelope, sable antelope, Cape hunting dogs, and a multitude of colorful birdlife. The lodges and camps of the south are small and intimate, with no more than 30 rooms or tents at the very most. This means there are far fewer tourists in the south compared to the north, and allows the area to hold true to the tenets of eco-tourism. The travel times between parks in the south are long as the parks are far apart. The parks of the south can be visited independently, or as a circuit combining various parks into one package. Packages can be arranged using scheduled air services or as road safaris using 4x4 vehicles.

Coastal Tanzania Safari Circuit

One of the great attractions of Tanzania is its fantastic 800 km coastline with palm fringed beaches of white sand and the historic towns of Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo, Kilwa, Lindi, Mikindani and Mtwara, along with the exotic islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia.

Swahili language and culture trace their roots to the Indian Ocean coastline. Many explorers, sultans and slave traders encountered Africa for the first time along this history-steeped coastline and contributed to the events that were to define modern Tanzania. The islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago became principal stepping stones for the culture that was to mould Tanzania’s people and their language.

Western Tanzania Safari Circuit

Lying in the Great Rift Valley are the inland lakes, Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika. All three national parks in this circuit offer the only safe opportunities to see chimpanzees in the wild today. The habitats of these areas are a merger between Western Africa and East Africa therefore the cultures, rainfall and flora are unique to this small area. The western circuit is seldom experienced on its own but is more often an addition to either the southern or northern circuits, or both. The western circuit is so remote that travel by both aircraft and boat is necessary in order to experience this lovely side of Tanzania.

It never gets really cold and light clothes are advisable, jeans, t shirts and shirts, short sleeves for the day and long sleeved for evening.

Just the usual casual stuff, sun cream, hat or cap, sunglasses, insect repellent.

No special dress code is required, people and places are quite laid back, even though it is always handy to have that special outfit on occasions:-))

To the west of the country, in the Lake Tanganyika region, you can go trekking in search of chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park and Mahale Mountains. Made famous by the legendary researcher Jane Goodall, the chimpanzee experience is a great addition to a Tanzania safari holiday.

Wildlife and wilderness aside, Tanzania also boasts some of the most romantic and unspoilt tropical beaches in Africa. First on the list of amazing Tanzania Beaches & Dive Adventures is Zanzibar, once home to Sultans and explorers, a place of exotic spices, azure waters and incredible architecture.

If you're new to Tanzania, the following might give you a few pointers as to how to get the best from a Tanzania Safari

If quantity of game is your main objective, then the north of the country - Serengeti and surrounding areas, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and surrounding areas and Lake Manyara are a good starting point.

However, we'd caution that quantity of game - even in something like the wildebeest migration - is rarely as important as quality of game.  Being able to appreciate the animals in your own way and without the company of endless traffic, is of fundamental importance.  Many of the best known parts of the north are crawling with tourists, so it pays to be selective about which bits you visit and when.

As an example, we'd suggest that you avoid the busy Central Serengeti where ever possible and look at visiting the quieter areas such as the northern Serengeti between August and October.

Southern Tanzania is lesser known than the north with a very different balance of species; different wildebeest in the Selous for example and no wildebeest, but vast herds of buffalo in Ruaha. There are also many more southern African birds, animals and plants.

In game viewing terms, the south is best between June and October, and Ruaha in particular can provide exceptional dry season game viewing, while Selous (which combines well with Ruaha) offers a great diversity of activities from walks to boat safaris, fly camping and, of course, game drives.

Please Contact Us!! for a fast Tanzania Safari quote.

Western Tanzania is far less visited than the north
Katavi National Park and Mahale Mountains. Put simply, this is where you head if you want to experience what Tanzania was like 20 years ago.  Because of the distances, and therefore cost, involved (Mahale is 520 miles from Arusha} it's visited by few people, but offers a quality of experience that is hard to find anywhere else.

No  fencing, here travelers are guests so they can't make demands in the Animal Kingdom, though there thorn bushes now and then  set up in Maasai Boma Style as make believe fencing:0)

Expect to be very close to the wild animals at least 50 - 100 meter's away from them. Sometimes 1m - 4 meters away from your vehicle and may be while they are also looking for the shed they will be under your vehicle for example Lion's.
